How to String a Steel-String Guitar

Guitar Strings Should be Changed Regularly.

Guitar strings get worn out.  The oils from your skin and normal strumming will cause your strings to lose some of the tone.  It is a good practice to change your guitar strings regularly.  Most strings will last from a couple of weeks to several months depending on the amount of use.  When it comes time to switch your guitar strings, you can follow these easy steps.

Guitar Imports offers Elixir Strings that have a special coating to help your strings last longer for only $15.99 (shipping included).

Insert each string into the corresponding hole in the bridge.

Insert the string into the hole in the bridge.

Push the bridge pin in the hole with the slot facing the headstock.

Press the bridge pin in the hole with the slot facing towards the headstock.

The bridge pin will hold the guitar string in place.  You will want to make sure that the ball end of the string is pulled tightly against the bridge pin.

The bridge pin will hold the guitar string firmly in place.

Pass the free end of the string through the hole in the tuning post.

Put the free end of the string through the hole in the tuning post.

After the string has been pulled through, you will want to loop the string back around the post and underneath the string.

Loop the string under the main string.

Bend the short part of the string back over the original string and pull it firm.  By doing pulling back over the string, the chances of a string slipping are virtually eliminated.

Pull the string back over the main string and pull it firm.

After winding the string to the desired tightness, clip off the 'tail' end of the string so it is flush with the top of the post.  Make sure that the string goes at lease on full time around the post.

Cut off the extra string with wire cutters so the string is flush with the tuning post.
